MAPLEWOOD
There are many common themes amongst those who live in Maplewood. Long-time residents speak of the life-long friendships they and their children have made in town. New residents tell the tales of being fed up with the high rents and lack of space in Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan. New and old residents started looking for a place close to work in NY or near an international airport, close to highways and places where they can work in NJ. They found a community that espouses the values they want their children to grow up with; education, artistry, work ethic, inclusion, and a passion and respect for the individual and community.
Small Town Living
The feeling you get as you walk around Maplewood is one of a small town, with a Rockwellian feel. Downtown Maplewood is affectionately known by residents as “the village.” with local shops, a book store, a diner, restaurants, art gallery, bagel store and pizzerias. Local stores and eateries are just some of the places where neighbors enjoy each others company and discuss the days event. Children on local soccer, baseball, football or lacrosse teams wear their team shirts go to the local movies with their friends from the robotics or fencing teams.
With an areas of just under 4 miles, Maplewood is America’s ultimate vision of the suburbs. Tranquil streets and parks, and sidewalks lined with trees and Colonial & Tudor homes.
Nature and Beauty
Maplewood is enveloped by natural beauty, from great street trees to the South Mountain Reservation - a recreation preserve which encompasses over 2,000 acres. At the Reservation you can hike trails or have a picnic, traverse the reservation and you can go to the Zoo, ride paddle boats, utilize the dog park or enjoy a leisurely stroll around the reservoir. Maplewood residents have access to an award-winning outdoor pool, and many parks.
Strong Sense of Community
Many times a year Maplewood comes together for both camaraderie and good causes. In July Maplewoodstock http://www.maplewoodstock.com a multi-day festival of music (and love!) is held in Memorial Park. Every few weeks, Rent Party raises money and food for local food pantries. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rent-Party/201546454016 , recently they began an end of summer Rent Party in Maplecrest Park. Maplewood can’t call Rent Party its own, it shares that community spirit, and so much more with our good friends in South Orange.
Transportation, Commuting and Travel
Maplewood is only 18 miles from Manhattan, Maplewood residents who travel to the New York City for employment usually do so by train, many riding the Jitney to the station. The train ride is approximately 30-40 minutes.
Newark Liberty International Airport is 10-15 minutes away from most of Maplewood.
Route 78, 24, 280, 80, 287, the GSP, and the NJ Turnpike are all close enough to make access to most of NJ very easy.
Schools and Politics
Maplewood residents share a quality school district with neighboring South Orange. The school district consists of six elementary schools, two middle schools and a single high school, which carries with it a reputation for academic excellence. In addition to advanced placement options, Columbia High School also offers vocational courses and college prep courses to help students grow. Journalism and film making classes are also available as are dozens of active clubs and two dozen varsity sports options.
The Township Committee is made up of five women and men as well as a mayor. If you want to get involved, vigorous public discourse is commonplace
